SHIPYARD SUBCONTRACTS OUT PHARMACY FOR RETIREES

{LEAD} Newport News Shipbuilding plans to close its pharmacy for retirees and disabled workers and subcontract the service to a pharmacy chain. The pharmacy provides subsidized drugs to eligible employees. In its place, the yard has subcontracted with Rite Aid Pharmacies to provide a similar service. Some 7,000 retired shipyard employees and their spouses, widows and widowers are eligible to buy prescriptions at the yard pharmacy. Current employees who are injured on the job and qualify for workers compensation are also eligible to use the pharmacy.
