AUTOCROSS SCHEDULED AT NAVAL AIR STATION

{LEAD} The Old Dominion Region of the Sports Car Club of America and the Tidewater Sports Car Club will showcase racing against the clock this weekend when they host the Mid-Atlantic national tour Yokohama Solo II autocross event at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.

The two-day event, held just inside Gate 4, is expected to draw more than 160 entries. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, continuing through the day until each car has made its required three runs.

{REST} The drivers will make solo runs in trying to establish the quickest times over two separate courses.

While there is no admission charges for spectators, and no grandstands from which to watch, Chris DePalma of the local sports car club, says car enthusiasts are welcome to walk through the pits, check out the cars, view displays, such as Kyle Petty's Winston Cup showcar, and gather information about the SCCA and its activities.

The cars range from economy models to Formula Ford powered models, and modifieds. They compete in four categories which include 37 classes, including women's divisions.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Chapter 48 of the Vietnam Veterans Association.

AT SOUTHAMPTON: Chesapeake's Bert Culpepper will be seeking his second straight victory at Southampton Speedway on Saturday night in hopes of continuing his climb to the top of the Late Model Sportsman standings.

Culpepper led the final 29 laps last week to win a 40-lap feature and closed to within 10 points of divisional leader Mike Shearin of Emporia.

In other divisions, Franklin's David Fowler tries to make it four straight victories in a 25-lap Mini Stock feature; Franklin's Tony Edwards takes a 28-point lead over Richard Holmes of Smithfield and Johnny West of South Mills into a 25-lap Limited Stock feature; Franklin's Vic Story and Capron's Speck Edwards resume their title battle in a 30-lap Sportsman feature; and brothers Mike and Chuck Perry of Carrsville headline a 20-lap Hobby Stock feature.

Time trials begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by heat races at 7.

The high-banked dirt track is located on Highway 58, 1mile west of Capron.

AT LANGLEY: Modified drivers will compete in their fourth race of the season Saturday night at Langley Raceway in Hampton. Division points leader Bret Hamilton of Midlothian had won two of the first three events.

A 100-lap feature is scheduled in the elite Late Model Stock division, which has produced six different winners this season. The only multi-winners are Eddie Johnson (4) and Greg Edwards (2). Chesapeake's Roger Sawyer got his first win last week.

Races also will be held for Limited Stock, Mini Stock, Pure Stock, and Grand Stock drivers.

Time trails begin at 5 p.m., followed by the first feature at 7. by CNB
