CHESAPEAKE CHILDREN TO RECEIVE FREE MEALS THROUGH THE SUMMER

{LEAD} Free meals for children will be available in Chesapeake during the summer.

Food will be served to children up to age 18 at several locations throughout the city:

{REST} Broadlawn Park administration building, 1745 Acorn St.

Camelot Elementary School cafeteria, 2901 Guenevere Drive.

Crestwood Middle School cafeteria, 1420 Great Bridge Blvd.

Edwards-Wilson Center cafeteria, 2701 E. Liberty St.

Sparrow Road Intermediate School cafeteria, 1605 Sparrow Road.

Each location will serve both breakfast and lunch except the Edwards-Wilson Center which will only serve lunch.

Meals will be served from June 20 through Aug. 19, Monday through Friday. Meals will not be served on Monday, July 4, however.

Breakfast times are 7 until 8 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Broadlawn and Edwards-Wilson sites and from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Camelot, Crestwood and Sparrow Road schools.

Funds for this summer food program come from a performance grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the City of Chesapeake, said Ken Ablett, administrative assistant with the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department.

``These meals will be served through the summer to those children who depend on school breakfast and lunch programs during the school year,'' Ablett said. ``But when school closes for the summer many of these children lose the opportunity for these meals. This program fills the gap.''

However, Ablett said the food service is available to any child regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or handicap.

``We will not make any checks on children coming through breakfast or lunch lines,'' Ablett said. ``Any child can come in and eat.''

The food served will meet USDA-approved nutritional requirements and meet USDA-approved menus.

Ablett said a typical breakfast will include French toast sticks, egg and cheese biscuits, peanut butter and jelly bars, grilled cheese sandwiches, various cereals, pancakes, honey-wheat doughnuts, milk, juices and fruit cups.

Lunches will include hot dogs, pepperoni or cheese pizza, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, various types of sandwiches along with milk, juice and fruit.

``Each breakfast or lunch we serve will be a balanced meal according to USDA requirements,'' Ablett said.

Ablett said the program will use experienced personnel who regularly serve lunches at school cafeterias. Foods for the free breakfasts and lunches will be purchased from reputable school food services, he added.

Next year the program will be expanded to serve meals at Portlock and Treakle elementary schools, Carver Intermediate School and possibly Truitt Middle School.
