BOTH PARTIES WILL HOLD PRIMARY ELECTIONS TUESDAY

{LEAD} Attention, Virginia Beach voters: You have choices to make Tuesday.

For starters, two elections are scheduled the same day. You first must decide which to vote in. Nearly all Virginia Beach voters can vote in EITHER the Democratic senatorial primary OR a Republican primary for the 2nd district Congressional seat. But you can't participate in both.

{REST} Keep in mind that you won't actually be electing anyone to office Tuesday. You're simply being asked to pick a particular party's candidate to run against others in November.

All registered voters across the state are eligible to chose a Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate. Charles S. Robb is seeking re-election to Congress but has three others bidding for the right to represent the Democrats: state Sen. Virgil H. Goode of Franklin County, Richmond lawyer Sylvia Clute and Nancy Spannaus.

Whoever wins that race Tuesday will square off in November against Republican Oliver L. North and possible independents J. Marshall Coleman and L. Douglas Wilder.

If you don't vote in the Democratic primary, then you're eligible to vote in the Republican primary between lawyer Jim Chapman and state Del. Frank Wagner. The 2nd congressional district, which consists of the majority of Virginia Beach and a large portion of Norfolk, is the only district in Virginia to hold a Republican primary this year.

Chapman and Wagner are battling Tuesday for the right to run this fall against Democratic Congressman Owen Pickett.

Only one precinct in Virginia Beach is not in the 2nd district and therefore ineligible to vote in the Republican primary Tuesday. If you vote at Centerville Elementary School, then you live in the 4th district. The Rev. George Sweet is unchallenged as the Republican nominee to take on incumbent Congressman Norman Sisisky.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 427-VOTE for more information about where to vote.
