MAN KILLED CROSSING STREET

{LEAD} A 25-year-old man who was walking across Shore Drive early Sunday was killed by a drunken driver, police said.

The victim was a sailor who was stationed at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base, police spokesman Mike Carey said.

{REST} Carey said the Navy man, identified as Brian K. Viner of Rutland, Mass., was crossing Shore Drive near Starfish Road about 1:40 a.m. when a westbound Mitsubishi four-door car hit him. Viner was struck by the car's right front bumper and was flipped headfirst into the windshield. He landed on the Shore Drive shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is the 56th fatality on Shore Drive since 1977. The road is the state's deadliest, police statistics show.

Carey said the driver of the car, Marvin L. Barrow, 25, of the 4800 block of Pretty Lake Ave. in Norfolk, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Investigators said other charges may be pending.
