SENATE DEOMCRATIC PRIMARY

{LEAD} Charles S. Robb

Age: 54

{REST} Home: McLean

Occupation: Lawyer

Political Offices Held: U.S.

Senate, 1989-present; governor, 1982-86; lieutenant governor,

1978-82 Storyline: Robb, still battling allegations of fast-lane socializing from his tenure as governor, faces three lesser-known challengers. He is backed by traditional Democratic groups: labor, teachers and abortion-rights advocates.

Campaign Issues: While unapologetic in his support for President Clinton, Robb touts his record of breaking with the Senate's Democratic leadership on critical issues, such as his support for the use of force in the Persian Gulf War and his vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Robb has not ruled out a tax increase or caps on entitlements to bring federal spending in line with revenues. He supports gays in the military.

Virgil H. Goode Jr.

Age: 47

Home: Rocky Mount

Occupation: Lawyer

Political Offices: State Senate, 1974-present

Storyline: Goode was little known outside his Southwest Virginia district when he jumped into the race two months ago as a scandal-free alternative to Robb. Goode is counting on a large turnout in rural areas.

Campaign Issues: By far the most conservative candidate in the primary, Goode has embraced the endorsement of the National Rifle Association. He surprised many by staking out a pro-choice position on abortion despite a lengthy record of supporting restrictions such as parental notification. Goode said he would slash congressional perks such as free parking at National Airport as a start in deficit reduction.

Sylvia L. Clute

Age: 51

Home: Richmond

Occupation: Lawyer

Political Offices Held: None

Storyline: Clute has won backing from the National Organization for Women, but her all-volunteer campaign has been hampered by a lack of funds and expertise. She touts herself as scandal-free and as an expert lobbyist on women's and children's issues.

Campaign Issues: Clute believes that Virginia should take the lead in defense conversion by transforming its military industry to environmental technology. She would use part of an increased tobacco tax to help Southside farmers convert to alternative crops. She favors the Equal Rights Amendment and is pro-choice on abortion.

Nancy B. Spannaus

Age: 50

Home: Leesburg

Occupation: Editor

Political Offices Held: None

Storyline: This is the third

statewide campaign since 1990 for Spannaus, a follower of political maverick Lyndon LaRouche.

Campaign Issues: Spannaus would strip the Federal Reserve of its quasi-independent status and dramatically increase deficit spending to rebuild the nation's infrastructure and create jobs.

She has labeled GOP nominee Oliver L. North a ``drug-runner,'' and claims the international financial markets are being corrupted by a far-reaching conspiracy involving the British press and American investors.
