NEWSPAPERS WIN HONOR

{LEAD} The Newspaper in Education Department of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star has placed second in the nation in excellence for newspapers with a circulation of 100,000-250,000. The competition was sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America.

Ann Haithcock Powderly is coordinator of the department. Ashley King is a consultant. The Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader took first place recently at a conference held in Memphis, Tenn.

{REST} The Newspaper in Education Department's mission is to go into classrooms to motivate young people to read and to make informed decisions.
