GREAT BRIDGE STICKS WITH A WINNER \

{LEAD} Call it superstition or just not wanting to tinker with success, but home team Great Bridge will be in the visiting dugout for today's 5:30 p.m. state semifinal softball game with Midlothian at Princess Anne High School.

Princess Anne and others who have played at the new field as the home team always have occupied the third-base dugout. Great Bridge (18-6-1) went in as a visitor in the Eastern Region tournament at Princess Anne and won three games and the championship while sitting on the first-base side.

{REST} The Wildcats decided to remain there for Friday's state quarterfinal game against Monacan, chalking up a 4-3 victory.

``It's our lucky side,'' said Great Bridge rightfielder Jamie Lemnios.

So that's where the Wildcats will be for the game that determines one of two berths in Friday's state final. The other game matches Woodbridge (24-2) against Gar-Field (22-4) at 5:30 p.m. today at Gar-Field.

Riding an eight-game winning streak, Great Bridge will send lefthander Stacey Adamson against Nicki Patton. Adamson (17-5-1), an excellent control pitcher who did not walk a batter in six of her victories, scattered six hits in beating Monacan.

Patton blanked Western Branch, 1-0, in the state quarterfinal at Midlothian, allowing seven hits. In her last six games, she has pitched four shutouts. She has recorded one no-hitter and four two hitters this season.

Central Region champion Midlothian (20-2) is led by shortstop Jenny McIntyre, a four-year starter who is batting .547 and is bound for Penn State on an athletic scholarship. Other mainstays include first baseman Katie Mills (.487) and outfielder Julie Smith (.400).

Leadoff hitter Marni Magyar paces Great Bridge with a .500 average and had two hits against Monacan. Centerfielder Emily Ouzts (.378) swings in the cleanup spot.

In the other semifinal, Gar-Field, the defending state champion, will send sophomore Kristy Dillard to the mound against another soph, Michelle Matthews, for Woodbridge. Matthews beat Langley, 3-0, on a one-hitter in the quarterfinals and holds two victories over Gar-Field in earlier meetings.

Great Bridge will have to leave its lucky bench at Princess Anne if its wins. The state final will be played at the home field of the Woodbridge-Gar-Field winner.
