MOORE'S 146 LEADS QUALIFYING FOR VA. OPEN, STATE AMATEUR

{LEAD} Scott Moore of Chesapeake fired rounds of 71-75 at par-72 Hell's Point Golf Course Monday to lead all qualifiers in sectional qualifying for the Virginia State Amateur and Signet Bank Virginia State Open.

Moore, 23, a recent graduate of Campbell University, shot 5-under 31 on his opening nine before cooling off.

{REST} ``Being medalist wasn't my goal, but I think it's great,'' Moore said. ``My goal was to not make any mistakes today.''

Moore's 2-over-par total of 146 led both portions of the qualifying, in which 12 local golfers made the field for the State Amateur, to be played June 30 through July 4 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Manassas. Seven berths were available for the 37th annual Signet State Open, which will be played July 14-17 at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.

Chris Tuttle of Chesapeake, qualifying for both portions, was second with rounds of 75-72, while Virginia Beach's Gary Strickfaden, who attempted to qualify for only the State Amateur, finished third with rounds of 73-77.
