The team he leaves behind, however, will try to regroup yet another time from another close call, a 2-1 loss in 10 innings to the Rochester Red Wings that further darkened the Tides' record in one-run games, in extra-inning games and in general.
{REST} Sherman Obando, the International League's second-leading hitter at .352, singled in the winning run off Mike Cook to send the Tides to 27-37, the first time they have been 10 games under .500. It also dropped them to 1-5 in extra innings and an abysmal 4-16 in games decided by one run.
Shane Turner was able to score on the hit because he was safe on Hare's second error at first base, an unfamiliar position for the outfielder. Hare, batting .316, played first to give Rico Brogna a rare rest and went 0-for-4, including a game-ending strikeout against Brad Pennington.
He also threw away a bunt in the eighth that led to a bases-loaded, no-outs situation that the Tides escaped. But in the 10th, Hare booted a one-out chopper by Turner that glanced off the first-base bag. The ball bounced to Cook, but Turner beat him to the bag.
Jim Wawruck then singled. Jeff Manto popped out, but Obando came through with the decisive hit.
Afterward, Hare, slumped at his locker, accepted his plane ticket from general manager Dave Rosenfield without the usual smile that delivery would create.
``You hate to let the team down,'' Hare said. ``You're still a competitive player. Yeah, I'm going up, but tonight's game was a very poor performance on my part.''
Hare is to be replaced today by outfielder Doug Dascenzo, who has been on rehabilitation assignment in Florida following elbow surgery.
Superlative pitching and defense highlighted a game that was 0-0 after eight. Rochester's Rick Krivda fired a three-hitter through eight innings, and the Tides' Joe Roa struck out eight through seven.
Rochester's Damon Buford stole extra bases from Brook Fordyce and a run from the Tides with a tremendous diving catch, and Tides third baseman Butch Huskey turned a would-be RBI double by Tracy Woodson into a double play with a dive of his own.
And the Tides got out of the eighth inning trouble when leftfielder Jim Vatcher threw out Buford at the plate as Fordyce cleanly picked a short hop and held on as Buford barreled in.
Still, poor execution eventually doomed the Tides. Jeromy Burnitz failed to bunt two runners over in the sixth, and Fordyce then grounded into a double play. Finally Hare's error, the Tides' 10th in three games, and a pitch that was a little too good to Obando finished them off.
