JAN LEBER\

{LEAD} ``I really think society loses something when people who have time and information don't volunteer it,'' Jan Leber said. ``There's a lot to be learned from people.''

And the Carrollton housewife is one of Isle of Wight County's busiest ``teachers'' of service.

{REST} Leber, 45, is an active volunteer in several community organizations, such as the Isle of Wight Arts League, the local Republican Party Women's Club and the PTA at Smithfield Middle School.

In addition, she recently took the VPI Extension Service's Master Gardener Program, which requires 50 hours of community service upon completion.

Leber sandwiches her volunteer activities around her first priority: family.

``My first job is being a mother and wife,'' Leber said. ``I've chosen to work my life around my husband and son because I think family is important.

``I am able to work my volunteering around their needs and schedules.''

Occupation: Housewife.

Marital status: Married to Robert.

A book you wish everyone would read, why? ``Atlas Shrugged.'' The danger of misguided social programs is illustrated in an exciting and enjoyable novel.

Favorite night out on the town: Dinner with a group of friends at the Grate Steak.

Favorite bar or restaurant: Carvers. They have such nice service.

Few people know . . . that I love the mountains.

What's the best thing about yourself? Even disposition and lots of patience. But when I lose it, look out!

Worst habit: Smoking.

First thing in the morning: Roll out my son and head for coffee.

Pets: None, but my son has one dog, two cats, three ferrets, one rabbit and a dozen fish.

Hobbies: Gardening, reading and crafts.

Ideal vacation: Two weeks at Miller's Shorewood Vista in Rhinelander, Wis. Three meals a day and they make your bed - super place!

First job: Head Start secretary.

Worst job: I guess I've been blessed because I've enjoyed all my jobs. I taught school for 10 years and enjoyed that. Motherhood has been great, and I am enjoying volunteering.

What would you like on your epitaph? ``She brought sunshine to our lives.''
