{LEAD} Thank God for Guy Friddell. In a newspaper whose editorial page increasingly suffers from moral blindness, historical amnesia and intellectual vacuousness (e.g., ``North the nominee,'' June 6), Mr. Friddell's column of June 6 is an oasis of sanity and rationality.

Mr. Friddell's continued presence on your pages offers some small measure of hope for the future of your paper in the face of the generally cheapened intellectual quality of other fare found therein.
