EDWARD H. PHELPS JR.

{LEAD} Edward H. Phelps Jr., 58, died at 9:41 p.m. Monday, June 6, 1994, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton after a short illness.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was an electronics engineer at McDonnell-Douglas Corp. in St. Louis for more than 25 years. He was a past noble grand and member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Greenwood Lodge 421 in North Alton; an elder, deacon and active member for 35 years at the Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton; and a member of the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen's Club in Godfrey.

{REST} Born Feb. 22, 1936, in Suffolk, Va., he was a son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Vick) Phelps Sr.

He married the former JoAnn M. Roberts in Alton on June 21, 1958. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Brent H. Phelps and his wife, Lynne, of Alton and Kirk R. Phelps of Aurora; five grandchildren, Sara, Bryan, Amanda, Brent and Tess; two brothers, Robert C. Phelps of Portsmouth and Richard L. Phelps of Fairfax; and his father-in-law, Leland Roberts of Godfrey.

The funeral was conducted June 9 in Gent Funeral Home, Alton, by the Rev. Jeffrey W. Jahn. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of one's choice.
