Or so it seemed Tuesday as the mercury and the humidity soared to levels that made it feel like it was 113 degrees at times. And there is no break in sight through the weekend.
{REST} A heat advisory is in effect at least through Thursday in central and southern Virginia.
Widely scattered thunderstorms - which popped up all around Hampton Roads on Tuesday - are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening hours today and Thursday.
Tuesday's storms were small but intense. They dumped a lot of rain in a short period and ripped the sky with lightning, which struck and critically injured two golfers at the Greenbrier Country Club in Chesapeake.
The brief storms offered little relief from the heat.
At 2 p.m., it was 93 degrees at the National Weather Service office at Norfolk International Airport. The humidity was at 52 percent. The heat-index reading was 111.
At 3 p.m., it was 96 in Newport News. The humidity was at 44 percent. The heat index was 112.
At 4 p.m., it was 92 at Norfolk Naval Air Station. The humidity was at 60 percent. The heat index was 113.
