``Elizabeth R'' began last summer as a spinoff of ``The Lost Colony'' outdoor drama. But the 45-minute play has evolved into an attraction all its own.
{REST} Written and directed by Roanoke Island resident Lebame Houston, the drama shows a side of the virgin queen that most people have never seen. The monarch cries, sings, laughs, tells jokes and explains the inner turmoil she undergoes while Sir Walter Raleigh is attempting to colonize the New World during the 16th century.
Elizabeth is portrayed by British actress Barbara Hird, who also has played that character in ``The Lost Colony'' for the past nine summer seasons. She dresses in a doublet and hose, and addresses the audience from her private sitting room.
Sponsored by the Friends of Elizabeth II and the Pioneer Theatre, the nonprofit play will be held at the 1934 movie theater on Budleigh Street in downtown Manteo every Wednesday afternoon. Tickets are $3 each and are available at the door.
Although subject matter is appropriate for audiences of all ages, Houston said the show is geared to people 13 and older. For more information, call (919) 473-2216.
