REINSTATEMENT OF LESBIAN COLONEL IS OPPOSED

{LEAD} The military will be irrevocably harmed if a discharged lesbian National Guard colonel returns to duty while the government appeals a ruling ordering her reinstatement, the Justice Department argues.

The government said it wants its motion considered quickly because reinstating Col. Margarethe ``Grethe'' Cammermeyer ``is likely to have adverse effects on the ability of the military to maintain morale, efficiency and mission focus.''

{REST} Court documents on the case were released Tuesday by department spokesman Joe Grovisky in Washington, D.C.
