Coached by Ed Core, the Reds will take on Trish Hughes' Stingers while the Braves, coached by John Grinels, will face Jerry Ivory's Obsession at 10 a.m., following opening day ceremonies, which will start at 9 o'clock.
{REST} League president Al Powers and Jim Morris of the city's Department of Parks and Recreation will serve as masters of ceremonies on the larger of the two-field complex behind the school.
Powers says the league has expanded from 19 to 21 teams this year and will have 290 girls involved. The additions came in the largest and smallest divisions. The junior division, for 11- and 12-year-olds, grew from six to seven clubs, and the seniors division, for girls 15 through 17 years of age, has two outfits this campaign instead of one.
Training division teams, for girls 7 and 8 years of age number three and the midget division, for 9- and 10-year-olds, has four squads. The teen division, for 13- and 14-year-olds, has five outfits.
Some season games will be played against clubs from South Norfolk, and the campaign will last until July 20 when a tournament begins. Games are an hour and a half long and are played Mondays through Thursdays, beginning at 5:45, 7 and 8:15 p.m.
ROSE TO FLORIDA: Tim Rose, former Great Bridge High baseball star who signed with the Chicago Cubs last year, reported to Kissimmee, Fla., June 8, and will play for the Cubs' Gulf Coast Rookie League team there.
The short season will begin June 20 and continue through Aug. 27, at which time Rose will probably return to the University of Virginia for another semester.
PISTOL REPORT: Ed Parker of Chesapeake was the match winner at the June three-gun bull's-eye pistol match here last weekend when he shot a 1704 out of a possible 1800.
Mike Achterhof of Suffolk fired a 1703 to take first expert honors and Don Cooke of Virginia Beach was second expert with a 1663. Rich Berndt had a 1502 to capture first marksman while Richard Klain was second marksman with a 1485.
GIRLS SOFTBALL: Jackie Miller's Tidewater Stars - a slow pitch softball team for girls 16 and under - entered their first softball tournament of the season last Saturday, lost the first game, but came back to win Richmond's June Shootout.
Miller's charges won the next four contests, including victories over the Great Bridge Twisters and the Firecrackers out of the Deep Creek area. The Stars are made up of half Virginia and half North Carolina players, and four Virginians are from Chesapeake.
``We have a really good team this year,'' Miller said. ``We beat one team, 24-0, and didn't allow a runner past second base.''
This weekend, the Stars travel to Chester where they will play in the Burger King Shootout. On June 25, they return to Richmond for the East-West Shootout.
