COOLER TEMPERATURES EXPECTED, BUT ONLY FOR A FEW SHORT DAYS

{LEAD} Gray skies made for cooler-than-expected temperatures most of Thursday, and forecasters now say the next few days may not be as oppressive as originally feared.

But the pressure cooker will be back at full steam by early next week, with temperatures again moving into the 90s.

{REST} At Norfolk International Airport, the mercury hovered in the mid-80s most of Thursday, surging to the low 90s late in the afternoon. The high came at 5 p.m., when the temperature hit 93.

Today should be partly sunny, with highs in the mid- to upper 80s, except cooler at the beaches. Winds will be southeast at 10-15 mph.

Tonight should be fair, with lows in the low to mid-70s and light winds.

It should be mostly sunny on Saturday, with highs in the upper 80s, except cooler at the beaches.

Sunday is expected to be hazy, hot and humid, with a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Lows will be in the 70s, with highs around 90.

It is likely to be hot and humid on Monday with variable cloudiness. There is a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Lows will be in the 70s, and highs will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

On Tuesday, the heat is expected to really start turning up again. It will be hazy, very hot and humid, with widely scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Lows will be in the 70s, and highs will be in the mid- to upper 90s, except around 90 at the beaches.
