MAN CHARGED IN RAPE

{LEAD} Detectives arrested a 23-year-old man Wednesday and charged him with raping a 74-year-old woman twice in her Oceanfront home, and then stealing money from her.

Police spokesman Mike Carey said William E. Riehl Jr. broke into the woman's home at 4:30 a.m. June 12 while the woman was sleeping. After sexually assaulting her, Riehl took an undetermined amount of money, Carey said.

Riehl, of the 500 block of 19th St., has been charged with two counts of rape, and one count each of sodomy, abduction and burglary with the intent to commit rape.

He is being held in the city jail on a $50,000 bond.

Detective Douglas E. Zebley is investigating the case.
