Mrs. Kindred was born in Norfolk. She was a civic and cultural leader for over 50 years in the Tidewater area and was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church-Lamberts Point. Mrs. Kindred had been involved in many organizations within the church, including the Senior Choir, Sunday School and Missionary Society. Civicly, Mrs. Kindred was very active in local politics. She was instrumental in the success of many state and local elected officials. She was famous for her political teas that she hosted in her home for many candidates. In her community she was always trying to help the less fortunate. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons she would always lead the drives for food baskets to make sure that everyone she knew of who needed food got it. In 1966 she was recognized as the outstanding citizen of her community. She was the former president of the Calvert Square Tenant Management Organization. She was the daughter of the late Lottie Robinson Jones and James J. Jones.
{REST} Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Kindred III of Norfolk and Dr. Walter Kindred of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Alice Whooden and Lavene Holley of Norfolk and Essie Snead of New York; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and daughters-in-law, Greta R. Kindred and Elsie D. Kindred. She was preceded in death by her only daughter, Irene Goodman.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at First Missionary Baptist Church Lamberts Point, 1268 W. 38th St., by the Rev. Anthony C. Paige. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The family will be at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday and at other times at 5413 Hargrove Blvd. in the Fairfield Forest section of Virginia Beach.
