WILLIAM A. WHICHARD, SR.

{LEAD} William Alfred Whichard Sr., 72, of Rt. 4, Horniblow Point, died Friday, June 17, 1994 in Duke Medical Center, Durham.

Mr. Whichard, a native of Chowan County, was the son of the late Dr. Murray Palmer Whichard and Mrs. Grace Morgan Whichard. A graduate of both The Citadel and the University of Alabama, he had retired as a Lt. Col. from the US Army after 29 years. During his military career he served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze and Silver Stars. He was a retired financial consultant and broker with the former Carolina Securities Corporation. A member and lay reader of St. Paul's Episcopal Church he had formerly served on its vestry. He was a member and past president of the Edenton Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was a former member of the Chowan Hospital Board of Directors.

{REST} Surviving is his wife, Ruth Byrum Whichard; two daughters, Lynn W. Partin of Edenton and Nancy W. Ratcliffe of Farmville, NC; one son, William A. Whichard, Jr. of Edenton; one sister, Pearl W. Townson of Raleigh, NC; and three grandchildren, Kristy Lynn Partin, Susan Elizabeth Partin, and Andrew Morgan Ratcliffe.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Russell Johnson. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad or to the American Cancer Society.
