CHARLESTON SHOOTS OUT WEARY 'CANES

{LEAD} Tired and spent after playing in Charlotte the previous evening, the Hampton Roads Hurricanes nonetheless forced a shootout with the Charleston Battery Saturday night.

But the Hurricanes' shootout formula, which had resulted in two previous victories, failed this time as Hampton Roads fell to the Battery, 2-1, in front of 3,722 at the Center for Effective Learning field.

{REST} The Battery sent four men - Paul Young, Andy Coggins, Shane Weems and Mario Lone - against Hurricanes keeper Tim Figureido and all four scored in the United States Interregional Soccer League's unique, experimental 35-yard shootout scheme.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes' Jon Hall and Mark Waite converted, but Mike McFarland and Eric Ferguson were stopped by Charleston keeper Mike Compisi, negating the need for fifth shooters by both teams.

McFarland's attempt to the low right corner was gloved by Compisi while Ferguson failed to get off a shot in the allowable five seconds.

Figureido had been inserted with three minutes remaining in overtime, replacing starting keeper Scott Budnick, in preparation for a shootout.

``If Figs looks great, I look smart,'' said Hurricanes coach Sonny Travis. ``If not, it's the wrong move and I'm to blame. But Figs had given up only one shootout goal on 11 tries. I think he's the best in the USISL at stopping them.''

In regulation, the Hurricanes got on the board first when Leroi Wilson unleashed a 25-yard blast from just outside the box that cozied just inside the right post at the 9:41 mark.

The Hurricanes turned in a solid defensive play midway through the opening half when Budnick dove to stop a direct kick by Young. The Battery was awarded a corner kick and Hampton Roads' defenseman Karl Byrd came up with a huge save, heading away a potential score by Lone at the goal mouth after Budnick was caught out of position.

But the Hurricanes couldn't hold off the Battery forever. Coggins found the net when a corner kick deflected his way, leaving him 12 open yards which he navigated for a 1-1 tie at the 16:21 mark.

It was evident that the previous evening's road games had exhausted both teams; while Hampton Roads beat Charlotte, 2-1 in a shootout, Charleston had been in Washington downing the Mustangs, 1-0.

``After a while, you're just playing on heart,'' Wilson said. ``We didn't even have 24 hours to recuperate.''

Charleston improved to 9-4 with the win.

The Hurricanes (5-7), who now have a week off, return to action next Saturday when they host the Florida Stars at Old Dominion.
