PEDALING FOR DIABETES RESEARCH

{LEAD} On June 11, hundreds of volunteers and cyclists shifted into high gear to support diabetes research and education in the American Diabetes Association's local bike-a-thon, Tour de Cure. Premiering in Virginia Beach, Tour de Cure raised more than $30,000 with the help of 209 cyclists and more than 120 volunteers, raising awareness about the seriousness of diabetes and its affects on the community.

I am grateful to all of the cyclists who attended this event. We can look forward to a larger and better ride in 1995! The American Diabetes Association and the cyclists owe tremendous gratitude to the volunteers, who helped out in the early hours of that morning, for making this event enjoyable and profitable, financially and emotionally. As a non-profit organization, we depend greatly on volunteer support, and the South Hampton Roads community came out in terrific numbers.

Sponsors, cyclists, volunteers - all made a positive impact on diabetes research and education, which will help the 70,000 people affected by diabetes in South Hampton Roads.
