He was born in Old Norfolk County and was the son of the late James and Charlotte Peterson Stokes. Mr. Stokes had retired from Proctor and Gamble in Portsmouth and was a graduate of the Norfolk Business College. He was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church for over 70 years where he had served as Lay Leader, chairman of the Administrative Board, teacher of the Builders Bible Class and more recently a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, Appomattox, Va.
{REST} Survivors include his wife, Margaret Dorset Stokes; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Hazel) D. Wyatt of Cedar Bluff, Va.; two sisters, Esther Swink and Chrystie Padilla, both of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Mrs. Michael (Leslie) Patton, Rebecca Matzkin and Emily Wyatt, and two great-grandchildren, Megan Patton and James W. Patton.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Oman Family Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Larry Adams. Burial will follow in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Oak Grove United Methodist Church or to the Memorial United Methodist Church, Appomattox, Va.
