TIDES BOW IN THE 9TH TO THE OTTAWA LYNX, 7-6

{LEAD} Derek Lee's one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Ottawa Lynx sank the Norfolk Tides, 7-6, Sunday.

Shane Andrews helped the Lynx' cause with four RBIs, including a fifth-inning home run and an RBI single in the eighth that tied the score at 5. Lee was 4-for-5 at the plate.

{REST} Pete Walker (1-2) took the loss.

``It was a great game. It's too bad there has to be a loser, we just came up a little short,'' said Tides manager Bobby Valentine, who was ejected in the top of the ninth for protesting a call by umpire Jim Wheeler.

Valentine was trying to make a point on what he thought was a missed call in the eighth inning. Quilvio Veras raced home from third base and appeared to beat the tag after catcher Tim Laker couldn't get a handle on a Darrin Winston pitch.

Valentine added, ``I'm proud of the guys. I just hope they keep this spirit going into Syracuse.''

The scoring started in the second inning when Andrews snapped out of a 0-for-17 slump. Dave Telgheder hung a curve ball on a full count and Andrews hit it to left to a two-run double.

He lashed another Telgheder off-speed offering 420 feet over the leftfield wall in the fourth inning for a 3-1 Lynx lead, but the Tides tied the score with a two-run sixth.

``It was a great game for us to win,'' said Laker. ``You like to win after fighting so hard and coming back.''

The trouble for the Tides, it turned out, was that Veras had already scored their sixth run, but didn't get credit for it.

``Yeah, I was safe,'' said the Norfolk second baseman. ``I didn't have to say anything.''

``We gave them a couple of punches and they gave us a couple of punches,'' said the Tides' Butch Huskey. ``It was just a great ball game.''

Notes: Friday night the Ottawa Lynx locker room was visited by thieves who made off with, among other things, Andrews' wedding ring and Laker's three gloves. The thievery continued Sunday when backup catcher Joe Siddall, on his way out the door to church, realized his car had been stolen. by CNB
