MARY LEE GARDNER

{LEAD} Mary Lee Gardner, 92, died Sunday, June 19, 1994, in James River Convalescent Center, Newport News.

A native of Nansemond County, Miss Gardner graduated from Suffolk High School in 1919, attended Madison College in Harrisonburg and obtained her B.S. degree in primary education from State Teachers College in Farmville. She taught in Suffolk and Nansemond County schools in the early 1920s and in Lenoir and Leaksville, N.C., schools from 1924 to 1940. After moving to Falls Church in 1940, she taught in Fairfax County schools until 1950 and in the Falls Church city schools until retiring in 1967. She was a member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church. She entered the Sleepy Hollow Nursing Home in Annandale in 1991, moving to James River Convalescent Center in August 1992, where she remained until her death.

{REST} Miss Gardner is survived by four nieces, Mrs. Bernice Jones Rawls of Suffolk, Mrs. Betty Jones Klepser of Arlington, Mrs. Annette Jones Birdsong of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Juliette Gardner Wheaton of Williamsburg; and one nephew, Matthew L. Gardner of Newport News.

Graveside services will be conducted by Dr. Chester L. Brown of Hampton Baptist Church at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, in Parklawn Memorial Park (Garden of the Word Section), Hampton. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home, Hampton.

Memorials may be made to Columbia Baptist Church (Hope Fidelis Sunday School class), Falls Church.
