ANTIQUE SHOP OFF TO GOOD START

{LEAD} Time has stopped in Isle of Wight County - at least it has at 21315 Brewer's Neck Blvd.

A Place in Time, the county's newest antique shop, opened recently. The store lets shoppers browse lazily through the past from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday.

{REST} The shop sells a variety of collectibles, furniture and glassware. But it specializes in the sale of cookie jars, said Jerry Barwick, who owns the business with partner, Lisa Thomas.

``Cookie jars are getting to be a big thing in collecting because you can't buy them in regular stores anymore,'' Barwick said. ``You usually have to go to specialty stores to find them today.''

Barwick and Thomas bought the more than 65 cookie jars lining the shelves of A Place in Time at auctions and estate sales. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including cartoon stars, Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird. Although collectible cookie jars can cost as much as $1,000, they average between $20 and $50 at the Carrollton shop.

A Place in Time also carries a good selection of antique bedroom furniture, record players, teacups and other collectible glassware, Barwick said.

Several antique stores have opened in Isle of Wight County in recent years. But Barwick believes his store's inventory is different enough from other shops to hold its own in the retail antique arena.

``Most other stores don't do as much as us as far as glassware,'' Barwick said. ``But competition is healthy . . . and there is enough business for everybody.''

Although A Place in Time has only been open a few weekends, business is off to a good start, according to Barwick.

``Things are going well for us already,'' Barwick said.
