THOMAS A. PHILLIPS JR.

{LEAD} Thomas ``Tom'' Alwyn Phillips Jr., 74, of Red Point Drive, died Tuesday, June 21, 1994, in Riverside Convalescent Center.

Mr. Phillips, a native of Bristol, Va., was the publisher of The Smithfield Times from January 1962 until 1984 when he retired. He was a Presbyterian, member of the George F. Dashiell Post (NU)49 American Legion and a captain in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He was predeceased by his wife Betty Rowell Phillips.

{REST} Survivors include two sons, Capt. Thomas A. Phillips III and Mark B. Phillips of Smithfield, a brother, Charles E. Phillips of Lynchburg; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at Colonial Funeral Home with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton. Burial will be private on Wednesday at Old Brick Cemetery, Bacon's Castle. The family suggest memorial donations may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23430. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, will handle arrangements.
