SPORTS HERO

{LEAD} In your June 19 paper, you may have performed a disservice to American heroes per se. American heroes daily risk their lives, and all too frequently lose them, performing duties or services for the salvation and benefit of their country, as well as others.

O.J. Simpson is an American and a sports hero.

{REST} I submit that your headline more appropriately should have read, ``The fall of an American sports hero'' to keep things in the right perspective.
