The new version has the same premise as its forefather. Two goofy but adorable surfer dudes from California (of course) decide after watching ``The Endless Summer'' for the 100th time, that they will travel the globe in search of the perfect wave and an endless summer.
{REST} We follow Patrick O'Connell and Robert ``Wingnut'' Weaver from California to Costa Rica, Alaska, Hawaii, France, South Africa, Fiji, Australia and Indonesia.
They meet up with some of the world's best surfers. Young and old, these experienced surf dudes show them the best local surf spots. If the surf's not up, they're introduced to some other form of wild native entertainment or they party it up with the locals. In almost any weather, water condition or temperature, they surf waves small enough to walk over and colossal enough to have sent Frankie and Annette fleeing ashore.
Each country has scenic shores, interesting natives and wildlife - elephants, lions, giraffes, ostriches, sharks, snakes and deadly spiders. While traveling from beach to beach, these young surf dudes are either admired or battled.
Bruce Brown, creator of both ``Endless Summer'' movies, narrates. He gives facts about each location's surf and legendary surfers. Pat and Wingnut were too busy riding to spend much time with the surf cam. Bruce fills us in on their lives and experiences. We also receive a brief history of surfing in America, as well as the evolution of the surfboard. All this, plus all of the surf lingo you can digest.
Pat and Wingnut, the Beavis and Butt-Head of the surf world, are still adorable. Their juvenile humor and escapist insight is often so ridiculous that it's hilarious. I ended up admiring them for being probably the two happiest people on earth - living out their dream, doing what they love best.
So, if you have a lot of patience for something entertaining in which you have little interest, or, if you want to impress surfer-types around Virginia Beach, you may enjoy this light, two-hour ``surfamentary.'' If you're into surfing, you'll be stoked. This is the next best thing to the beach.
