{LEAD} James Edwin ``Eddie'' Johnson, 79, a self-employed painter, died June 22, 1994, in a local hospital.

Mr. Johnson was born in Richmond, Va., and lived in Norfolk for over 50 years. He was the widower of Ethel Peaco Johnson. He was a member of Painters Local Union (NU)1100 and Knights of the Pythias Charity Lodge (NU)10. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

{REST} Survivors include one daughter, Linda S. Peaco of Richmond; one sister, Mrs. Ray L. (Marjorie) Lipscomb of Richmond; one brother, Kenneth L. Johnson of New Jersey; one grandson, Phillip A. Schutz of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.
