Mr. Hemmings was born in Camp Shelby, Miss., and was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
{REST} Survivors include his wife, Virginia P. Hemmings; two sons, Doug Hemmings and Leon Hemmings, both of Chesapeake; one brother, Norman Hemmings of Portsmouth; one half-brother, Fred Browne of Portsmouth; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest W. Myers. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Military honors will be accorded at the grave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to The Gideons Bible International.
