N.C. RAILROAD WANTS MORE MONEY FROM NORFOLK SOUTHERN
{LEAD}
Stockholders of North Carolina Railroad want Norfolk Southern Corp. to pay
more money to use the state-controlled rail line. Norfolk Southern's lease on
the 317 miles of tracks from Morehead City to Charlotte expires at the end of
this year. Norfolk Southern pays about $600,000 a year in rent. Walker Rucker,
a NCRR stockholder in Greensboro, says the rent ``should be in the millions.''
Contract talks began more than a year ago. Norfolk Southern and NCRR officials
have refused to comment on the negotiations.
