An array of business groups and Republican politicians has written to complain the pollution-control plan does not mesh with the GOP governor's pro-business agenda.
{REST} Hoping to smooth things over, two of Allen's Cabinet members plan to meet soon with the presidents of Northern Virginia's largest companies.
The plan Allen submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency last week would require employers with more than 1,000 workers at one site to try to reduce commuter trips by 20 percent.
One suggestion is to offer transit passes, shuttle buses and preferential parking for car-pool riders.
That provision is seen by many as a jab at the federal government, which would have to conform to the requirements.
But according to a list compiled by the Fairfax Economic Development Authority, it also would extend to two dozen corporate giants in Northern Virginia.
The mandate would cost businesses millions of dollars, said Fairfax Chamber of Commerce Chairman Clark Massie.
