'CANES WILL BE SEEING STARS AT ODU TONIGHT

{LEAD} The stars will be out in more ways than one when the Hampton Roads Hurricanes make a rare appearance tonight at Old Dominion University.

The Hurricanes will be hosting the Florida Stars in a non-divisional game at ODU soccer field beginning at 7:30 p.m. And Hampton Roads will have two stars of its own in the starting lineup.

{REST} Hurricanes officials confirmed Friday that Mark Waite and Neil Mason will be on the U.S. Interregional Soccer League's Atlantic Division All-Star team.

The team will be announced in its entirety on Monday.

The Hurricanes will be host team for the USISL All-Star Game, which will pit the Atlantic Division All-Stars against an all-star team from the rest of the USISL on July 6.

``It's a surprise, a real honor, it really is,'' said Waite, a rookie midfielder for the Hurricanes. ``We're in a really good division with a lot of good players. I'm not the kind of player who looks for these kinds of awards, but I'm proud of it nonetheless.''

Waite wasn't nearly as surprised as Mason, a rookie defensive back who has garnered little publicity but has nonetheless been solid throughout the season.

``I've been pretty consistent and I don't think I've had a bad game,'' Mason said. ``People keep telling me I look so composed back there. I've felt composed. It's just been a natural.''

Both Waite and Mason were shocked that goalkeeper Tim Figureido did not make the roster.

``I haven't seen a better goalkeeper than Tim this year,'' Waite said.

``I knew Tim was good from having played against him when he was at ODU and I was at (Virginia Commonwealth University),'' Mason said. ``He's quick and makes good decisions.''

The Hurricanes are playing at ODU tonight as a change of pace, hoping to tap into a fan base they might not have touched upon while playing the majority of their games at CEL Field in Virginia Beach.

In the Hurricanes' only preseason exhibition game, they drew a crowd 3,765 at ODU for a 5-1 victory over New Jersey-based Club de Portugal. by CNB
