9 BEACH STUDENTS WIN PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARDS

{LEAD} Nine Virginia Beach students are among the 6,700 graduating seniors across the country to receive Merit Scholarships this year.

Scholarships totaling about $25 million were awarded this year by the non-profit National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

{REST} The scholarships are based on a student's academic record; scores from two standardized tests; significant contributions to the school and community; personal interests and goals; and the recommendation of the student's high school principal.

More than 1.1 million students in more than 19,000 high schools applied. The recipients were chosen by a committee of college admissions officers and secondary school counselors.
