HAZEL C. JONES

{LEAD} Hazel Combs Jones, 73, who had resided at Georgian Manor, located in the Riverwalk section of the city and formerly of the 700 block of Kempsville Road, died Sunday in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mrs. Jones was born in Christian County, Ky., and was the widow of Henry Milton Jones. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church and had served as the Sunday School teacher for the primary class for over 20 years. She was past president of the Great Bridge Elementary School PTA and of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Washington Borough Volunteer Fire Department. During World War II, Mrs. Jones was a riveter on P-38's at an Indiana airplane factory. She had also managed a beauty shop in Hopkinsville, Ky.

{REST} Survivors include her daughter, Linda J. Byrd and son-in-law, Lyman E. Byrd; son, John E. Jones and daughter-in-law, Karen D. Jones, all of Chesapeake; brother, Elmer Combs of Summerville, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Johnna Byrd, Amy Byrd, Meredith Jones and Melinda Jones.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oman Family Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Chip Roberson, the Rev. John Dearing, the Rev. Robert Sowder and the Rev. Larry Brown. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. At other times the family will be at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, 613 Ravenwoods Drive, Chesapeake.
