ARMED FORCES' CHIEF

{LEAD} I do not agree with the Vietnam War protesters, because my father was a fighter pilot for two tours there and was almost killed. However, this country is based on freedom; the men who died during war did so to protect our rights.

Bill Clinton is the president of the United States, and he will be for at least two more years. He is the commander in chief of the armed forces and should have presided over the Memorial Day and D-Day ceremonies, contrary to what Ellen Heller writes (letter, ``Mocking heroes,'' June 16). It is the position we must respect, whether or not we like the man.
