Mr. Bretz was born in Aitkin, Minn. He retired on July 1, 1973, from the U.S. Navy as a master chief petty officer after 30 years of service and was currently vice president of Hercules Fence Inc., Norfolk. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
{REST} Survivors include his wife, Sumalee K. Bretz; one son, R. Dale Bretz of Newport News; his mother, Mary Chaney of Florida; three sisters, Lillian McCullough of Florida, Audrey Bellak of Illinois and Kathleen Lindroth of California; two granddaughters, Angelia Bretz and Casey Bretz, both of Newport News; three nieces, Roxanne Bretz of Illinois, Kathy Bretz and Krista Bretz, both of Louisiana; and three nephews, Lee Bretz of Minnesota, Joe Bretz of Louisiana and Verasak Singhaseni of Newport News.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, by Father Merritt P. Jones. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Full military honors will be accorded at the grave.
