EDITORIAL MEDIOCRITY

{LEAD} An editorial, like a theater review, is simply one person's opinion. An editor must have an opinion on a wide variety of subjects, not just one issue, as the majority of letters imply.

What bothers me about the present editorial page is that whatever the subject addressed, it is presented in such a lightweight, superficial manner as to be inconsequential.

{REST} Remembering the giants of yesterday - Lenoir Chambers, Louis Jaffe, Bob Mason - I am saddened by the mediocrity of today.

Fortunately, we still have Guy Friddell, George Tucker, Larry Maddry and Mal Vincent to carry the torch for excellence, each in his own way.
