WILLIAM S. PEEBLES III

{LEAD} William S. ``Bill'' Peebles III, born May 21, 1927, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Lawrenceville, Va., died June 29, 1994.

Mr. Peebles was a 1950 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., a graduate of the New York University School of Retailing and a graduate of the Executive Program of the Darden School at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He attended Virginia Military Institute from 1944 to 1945.

{REST} Mr. Peebles was president and CEO of W.S. Peebles & Co., Inc., from 1973 to 1986. He continued in those positions and had the additional title of chairman from 1986 to 1989 of Peebles, Inc. He served as a member of the board of directors from 1986 to 1990. Mr. Peebles was a grandson of the founder of the company and began his career with the company in 1952 as a store manager. He was named Independent Retailer of the Year in 1988 by the National Retail Merchants Association. He served on the boards of several companies and organizations, including Dominion Resources, Brick and Tile Corp., Goodman Segar Hogan, East Coast Oil Corp. and the Darden School of Trustees.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Settle Peebles; two daughters, Palmer P. Garson and Mary Peyton Peebles, both of Richmond; two sons, W.S. Peebles IV of Asheville, N.C., and John Lee Thompson Peebles of Carrboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; his mother, Sarah Palmer Peebles of Richmond; a sister, Joy P. Massie of Goochland; and a brother, Charles Palmer Peebles of Buena Vista.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. in Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday in Oakwood Cemetery in Lawrenceville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
