CURTIS DEAL HELPS TEAM WIN SHERIFF'S GOLF OUTING

Curtis Deal, former Great Bridge High star golfer, and a member of the Virginia Tech team, had the longest drive and helped his team win Sheriff John R. Newhart's fifth annual tournament.

Deal, who qualified for the NCAA national tournament in Texas a few weeks ago, teamed up with Bill and Billy Judah and Mark Compton to capture the first flight in the four-man Florida best ball event at the Greenbrier Country Club last week.

Second place in the first flight went to the team of Frank and Joe Falk, Ray Cartwright and Jim Ruppe. Third spot went to Virginia Beach Sheriff Frank Drew, Paul Lanteigne, Harry Diezel and Billy Garrington.

Capturing the second flight were Joe Dipaola, Tep Ambrose, Robert Boyd and Larry Brandham. Placing second were Eddie Hodges, Red Poythress, David Roughton and Jimmy Dunlo. And taking third were Lewis Witt, Gary Fischer, Paul Story and Tom Harry.

Closest to the pin winners were Frank Darden, fourth hole; Greg Everton, nine hole; Mike Mills, 12th hole; and Dwight Darden, 16th hole. Steve Nelson was judged to have the fastest clubhead speed.

WILDCAT WINNERS: There was a three-way tie for most valuable player in baseball and a two-way tie in softball at Great Bridge High's recent spring sports awards ceremony.

David Ellyson, Jeremiah West and Adam Legum shared the baseball honor while Marni Magyar and Stacey Adamson were the softball honorees. Derek Bryan was named most valuable player for boys tennis.

In track, John Johnson won the boys' title while Charndra Lewis took the girls' award. Mike Arbogast was picked boys soccer MVP and Rachel Brantley was selected for the girls program.

LOWERY WINS AWARD: Scott Morgan Lowery has received the Buck Miller Memorial Scholarship Award for his outstanding academic achievement while participating in school and community activities.

Lowery was one of five 1994 high school graduates honored by Deep Creek Baseball's scholarship committee. Other winners were Billy Lee Stone, Brian O'Neal Tapp, Chad Michael Robins and Keion Monte Smith.

Miller was a longtime baseball booster in the Deep Creek area and helped develop the Pony League there.

Lowery plans on attending Old Dominion, where he will major in either business or sports management.

According to Elmer Vega, league president, the awards are in the $300 to $500 range.

AUTOCROSS RESULTS: Three Chesapeake residents won their classes in the Tidewater Sports Car Club's 28th annual race against time at the Fentress Airfield last Sunday.

Allan Pebworth drove his Austin-Healy Sprite to victory in the DP division with a time of 70.852. Stephanie Myatt took the LDS bracket in her Honda CRX SI in 82.118, and Paul Dionne wheeled his Mazda Miata to a time of 68.803 to capture the NCS classification.

When a national handicapping system was applied, Dionne finished fourth overall with a corrected time of 57.588. Pebworth came in 21st with a 64.688 and Myatt was 24th with a 68.076.

STUKES' TEAM WINS: David Stukes' AAU basketball team from Chesapeake defeated a Kentucky team, 58-53, in a national tournament game at Memphis, Tenn., Monday night.

Antwan Stukes led the locals with 15 points while Anton Butts scored 12 and Terrell Ricks added 10. The team's next game was scheduled last Tuesday morning, but the results were not available by deadline.

PISTOL REPORT: Marvin Achterhof of Suffolk was the match winner at the Norfolk County outdoor pistol match last weekend when he fired a 2479 out of a possible 2700.

Fred Vanderslice of Virginia Beach shot a 2374 to take first sharpshooter honors and Nathan Gray of Moyock, N.C., was second with a 2270.

The next Norfolk County Rifle Range match will be Aug. 6. Meanwhile, the national competition will be at Camp Perry, Ohio, July 11-18.

COED SOFTBALL TOURNEY: The inaugural Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Fourth of July coed softball tournament is scheduled for the Greenbrier and Indian River fields Saturday and Sunday. Lou Parsons, tourney director, said Monday is be held as a rain date.

Parsons also said the women's metro regional qualifying tournament will be in Chesapeake July 9-10, and he is expecting 12 to 15 teams. Virginia Beach hosted the tourney last year.

The state tournament for Class C clubs will be Aug. 20-21 in Roanoke. Class D teams will battle at Fredericksburg the same weekend.

Regional competition for Class C teams will be in Richmond on Labor Day weekend. Class D teams will compete in Philadelphia the same weekend. ILLUSTRATION: Home, home on the range
