F. Carleton Gates, 92, of Virginia Beach, died June 30, 1994, in his residence.
Mr. Gates was the son of the late Fred H. Gates and Lillian Rinehimer of Wilkes Barre, Pa. He was predeceased by his son, Cmdr. Fred H. Gates II, who died at sea during the Vietnam War in 1967. He was the superintendent of Ben Franklin Stores and the S.S. Kresge Stores until 1953 when he became the store manager of Fox's Inc. in Centreville, Md., until retiring in 1971.
Survivors include his wife, Mary MacLeod Gates; a daughter, Sally Louise Herzer of Virginia Beach; one son, Macleod Douglas Gates of Chestertown, Md.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2, in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Andrew MacBeth. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, in Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville, Md. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
