Thomas Jefferson Hernandez, 79, a native and resident of Norfolk, died in a local hospital on Thursday, June 30, 1994, after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Elmo Philip and Adele Powell Hernandez. He retired in 1975 after 39 years of employment with the Norfolk and Western Railroad as an assistant pier master at Lambert's Point.
For nearly 20 years Mr. Hernandez was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist Church and for the past five years had served as a Deacon. He was also co-chairman of the Property Committee and a member of the Melton Bible Class. He regularly supported the Operations Committee of the church in its work, and was a member of the Edgewater Association of his community.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Wright Hernandez; a sister, Virginia H. Ward of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Freemason Street Baptist Church by Dr. Donald J. Dunlap and the Rev. Wayne T. Blythe. Burial will be on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Powell's Point Christian Church Cemetery in Harbinger, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Freemason Street Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1739, Norfolk, Va. 23501. The family will receive friends at their home on Studeley Ave. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
