DARWIN J. ARCHBELL

Darwin J. ``Pete'' Archbell, 53, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Amherst County, Va., died June 30, 1994, in his home.

Mr. Archbell was born in Norfolk, son of the late Ruth Halstead Archbell and James Clark Archbell. He was vice president and founder of Archbell Signs Inc., which he began in 1962. He was membership chairman and past director of Lake Wright Golf Association; member of Tidewater Builders Association; organizer and sponsor of the Pilot Invitational Golf Tournament; in 1968 was named Outstanding Young Businessman of America; organizer and former coach of Azalea Little League; and active member and former director of the Norfolk Jaycees. He was a longtime member and former chairman of the Amherst County School Board and was honored by Amherst County High School with the dedication of the Darwin J. Archbell Vocational Wing. He also contributed to many charitable organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Gail Robertson Archbell; one daughter, Kimberly Archbell Hayes and her husband, Steven D. Hayes, of Chesapeake; one son, Darwin J. Archbell Jr. and his wife, Betty Archbell, of Nelson County, Va.; and two grandsons, Dalton Lee Archbell of Nelson County and Steven D. Hayes Jr. of Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chesapeake Beach Rescue Squad.
