3 HURT IN SHOOTOUT AT NORFOLK GAS STATION AN ARGUMENT AMONG THE MEN APPARENTLY GREW INTO A GUNFIGHT.

Three men were wounded in a late-afternoon shootout Thursday at a gas station parking lot near Military Circle mall. One man was shot four times, another was shot three times and the third was hit once.

No passers-by were struck by flying bullets.

An employee of the Exxon station in the 5800 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. said a customer entered the store shortly before 4:30 p.m. and reported seeing men with guns arguing in the parking lot. Police were called, arriving in time to see the gunfight.

``It seems that `A' shot `B,' and then ran out into the street followed by `C,' who then shot `A.' `C' then ran back to the parking lot and collapsed from gunshot wounds which he received,'' Lt. Ray Simmons said. ``We still don't know who shot `C.' ''

Police and a nursing supervisor identified the victims as Milton Shaw, 19, of the 3000 block of Tait Terrace, who was shot in the neck, back, right arm and left hand; Dino A. Whitehurst, 22, of the 1200 block of Thistle St., who was shot three times in the head; and Frank L. Hinton, 37, of the 2700 block of Liberia Drive, who received one gunshot wound to the left temple. All of the men were from Norfolk.

Whitehurst, the most seriously injured, was listed in critical condition late Thursday. The other two victims were listed in serious but stable condition.

Police recovered the three guns used in the shootout and an additional gun found in a late-model gray Toyota Celica that police say belonged to one of the men.

More than 20 witnesses were taken in for questioning, police said, including several men who were in cars with the victims before the shootings.

Police said they do not know the relationship between the victims or the motive for the shooting. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
