Students and educators in South Hampton Roads will get to peek inside the C-SPAN school bus, a mobile TV-production facility and interactive media demonstration center.
The 45-foot customized motor coach is designed to give visitors ``hands-on'' experience with electronic television and its use in education. C-SPAN provides extensive government coverage in the nation's Capitol and allows national debate of public policy issues through live viewer call-in programs and ``town hall'' forums.
Tuesday's school bus tour will include stops at Craddock Middle School in Portsmouth, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.; Old Dominion University in Norfolk, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; the Boys and Girls Club of South Hampton Roads, 3401 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, noon to 1 p.m.; and Tandom's Pine Tree Inn in Virginia Beach, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
At ODU, graduate and undergraduate education students enrolled in summer classes will visit the bus from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
``The main thing is to show students and teachers how C-SPAN can be used in the classroom as a teaching and learning tool,'' said Beth Cooper, a spokeswoman for ODU.
Irvine Hill, director of communications for Cox Cable of Hampton Roads, said his company provides cable wiring free to schools in the region to show C-SPAN government programming, including live, unedited interviews, press conferences and congressional debates.
``It provides an enhancement to the schools' curriculum,'' Hill said. by CNB
