The Virginia Bar Association and the four U.S. Senate campaigns reached a final agreement Friday on a time, date and format for a debate next month.
The bar association will host the 90-minute debate beginning at 8:30 p.m. July 16 at The Homestead in Hot Springs. Thomas R. Morris, the president of Emory and Henry College, will be the sole moderator.
``Everybody's in agreement,'' said Ken Storey, a bar association spokesman.
The bar association changed its plans several times to accommodate Republican Oliver North. The debate was originally proposed for 9:30 a.m., but North said he could not get there until evening.
The group also asked a panel of reporters to serve as questioners, but North said he wouldn't come unless the debate had at most one moderator. He said he preferred a ``Lincoln-Douglas'' style debate that would allow candidates to state their positions in turn, without interruption.
The bar acquiesced Thursday to a single moderator, but during a conference call, North's deputy campaign manager, Mark Merritt, said July 16 was a bad date and asked for ``a continuance,'' a legal term for a delay.
During a later conference call, North aides said the candidate could be available by 8 p.m.
