In about a year, Isle of Wight Animal Control officer Brad Burgett hopes to switch uniforms, from animal control officer to police officer.
At least, that's Burgett's goal.
Burgett, whose father is in the Air Force, came to Hampton Roads from New Mexico 16 years ago, when his father was transferred.
Today, while working as an animal control officer, Burgett, 26, is taking evening classes in administration and justice at Paul D. Camp Community College.
Between the two, Burgett said his schedule is very busy.
``But my wife Mary is behind me 100 percent. And that means a lot,'' he said.
Burgett said most of his time on the road is spent answering calls to pick up stray cats and dogs.
Once in a while, he gets a call that comes because one neighbor's dog has damaged another neighbor's property.
``I always try to talk to both parties,'' he said. ``And I hope that they'll resolve their differences between themselves. The last alternative is a summons.''
Burgett said his job with Isle of Wight is a steppingstone to his future.
``It's a learning experience,'' he said.
