GILBERT F. RIEMAN

Gilbert Fletcher Rieman, M.D., of 214 Cabbage Lane, Wilmington, N.C., died Saturday, July 2, 1994 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in New York City, N.Y. on Jan. 15, 1926, the son of the late Lt. Col. and Mrs. Gilbert Rieman.

He graduated from Woodberry Forest School, Woodberry, Va. in 1943; and attended Virginia Military Institute. He volunteered for the 17th Airborne Division, and served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations until 1946. He graduated in 1948 from the University of Virginia with a BA degree; and graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1952. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Rieman was in private practice in Norfolk as an Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician and was on active staff of Norfolk General Hospital from 1957 until 1972.

He was an associate professor, Department of ObGyn, University of North Carolina Medical School, and was Director of the University of North Carolina Medical School Service, ObGyn, New Hanover Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, N.C., until 1986.

He held membership in the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Medical Association, past president of the Seaboard Medical Association and was member of the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and was a Fellow with The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and was the author of several medical papers.

Dr. Rieman was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, and was a past commander of Cape Fear Power Squadron.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Harriet Gilbert Rigby Rieman of the home; his children, Mrs. John Cook of Chatham, N.J.; Gilbert Fletcher Rieman Jr. of Hillsboro, N.C.; Lawrence Rigby Rieman of Wilmington; Mrs. Richard Forrest of Hillsboro, N.C.; and Mrs. David Beauchamp of Wilmington; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, 1994, in St. James Church by the Rev. Charles G. vonRosenberg.

Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Riverview Cemetery, Charlottesville, Va., under direction of Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville, Va.
